Spring Fling! Open Studios A-Go-Go!

For three days at the end of May, Dumfries and Galloway hosts the most successful open studios event of its kind in Scotland. OK, that's from the super-glossy brochure, and quite what of its kind means is anyone's guess. All I know is there were 84 artists participating, in an area of around 2,400 square miles. We got to see 12 of them over the weekend and reckoned that was pretty good going.

On Saturday we took the red route, starting at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries.
By a rather brilliant stroke of scheduling luck, a major exhibition of the work of Vija Celmins was being staged.

Of the Open Studios artists at Gracefield, I particularly liked Ewan McClure (here: http://ewanmcclure.wordpress.com/ ). The work I photographed is not really that representative of his pictures, but I loved it. And T2 spent close on an hour copying it into his sketchbook while I was meditating on the Celmins.

It's called Here's Looking at Euclid.

Finally, I was rather taken with this series of plaques by the potter Andrew Adair.

I'll feature some more artists over the rest of the week. The brilliant Great Aunt Jennifer yet to come!
