What varieties are they? No idea, I inherited them from Great-Grandma McKay.
Hostas are good.

Very good.

Especially in shady corners.

Leave plants you have not yet planted inside the paper gift-bag they came in on Mother's Day. They'll do fine!

Use black magic to tame the lawn.

Or the plastic bagel and peg method.

Or invite friends to help.

Remember, a garden is a great place to experiment.

And if all else fails, just have a woodlouse garden. We like them so much we have two.
